Healthy Eating

Food and Drink

Here at Crosby Nursery we pride ourselves to offering our children a healthy & balanced diet.

Careful thought is put into the menus that are created by our highly qualified chef. They are on a four week rotation & are changed four times a year for each season. It is our aim to give all children the opportunity of well balanced and nutritional choices, whether they are weaning, have an allergy or intolerance to a specific food or are simply on their growing journey.

We like the children to have their own independence, so they choose for themselves at breakfast, snack time and pudding. Water is available at all times.

At snack time all savory items are free from sugar to co-inside with the smile4life policy that we follow.

Main meals are from various cultures, giving the children and varied diet. They always contain at least two vegetables, and a carbohydrate to give children energy throughout the day. Fruit & yogurts are available at all pudding times, and sugar in home baked products is kept to a minimum.

Special menus are designed around national occasions such as Chinese New Year or vegetarian week.

We buy all our ingredients from local suppliers, Steve Wilsons butchers and Interfresh fruit and vegetables. Everything is homemade, where possible and we pride ourselves by continually gaining 5 stars in food hygiene rated by the food standards agency.

Special dietary requirements & weaning babies are also catering for; liaising with parents to identify their personal needs, advice is given where required. A booklet created by our chef is available for you to look at if your child has an allergy so meals can be easily identified if they are not suitable for your child. http://www.food.gov.uk/science/allergy-intolerance/label/labelling-changes

Mealtimes are a happy social occasion for the children and staff. Good table manners are promoted by showing them how to use a knife & fork and they are also encouraged to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Staff engage at meal times discussing different ingredients, where they come from & how they are grown, in order to widen & develop their knowledge.

In the spring the children join in to plant seeds in our vegetable plot, they then continue to water them, watch them grow and then eat the fruit & vegetables that they have produced in their meals.

Our chef spends time with the children cooking & discussing different foods & helps them with their understanding of healthy eating, enhancing their skills of knowledge and physically using different equipment.

Our chef is committed to give any support to parents & is happy to give out any recipes we use in nursery to encouraging eating at home.
